Eicha (Lamentations) is the scroll read on the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'av, the anniversary of the destruction of both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem. This song describes the annual commemoration of the destruction, the two thousand years that the land was barren and the modern miracle of the homecoming of the Jewish People. Midsummer, on the Ninth of Av, Jewish communities around the world fast for twenty-five hours, sit on the floor, do not greet one another, sing dirges and mourn. The melody in the middle of the song where the lyrics are in Hebrew is the traditional trope as recited in synagogue. May we all merit to see the Temple rebuilt speedily in our day.
